Prototype to production

When I set out to create The Sidecar, I had one simple goal: make outdoor cooking and entertaining easier. What I didn’t realize was just how many iterations it would take to get it right. Like most great things in life, The Sidecar wasn’t perfect on the first try—or the second. It took three versions (and plenty of trial and error) before I finally had a design that was worthy of your patio.

Version 1: The Franken-Sidecar

The first version was a true backyard-built prototype. I bought a stainless steel table on amazon and started adding aluminum parts to it. It was functional, sure, but it wasn’t pretty. More importantly, it lacked some of the key features that make The Sidecar truly indispensable—like a power strip and doors. But it gave me something to test and begin using.

Version 2: The "Almost There" Sidecar

After gathering feedback from friends and family (and realizing that no one wanted to juggle utensils, spices, and drinks while cooking), I went back to the drawing board. Version 2 had a larger workspace, better storage, a drawer, integrated power and a sturdier build. It was a massive improvement, but it still wasn’t quite right. It needed bigger wheels, easier door hinges and a higher-quality finish.

Version 3: The Production-Ready Sidecar

In addition to friends and professional feedback, the factory that I selected to manufacture the Sidecar, Platform 88, had incredibly valuable insight into the final design. Every component, weld, and fastener was reviewed and considered for the final design. After 3 years of improvements and optimizations, the Sidecar was finally ready for production and then ultimately your patio.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Creating The Sidecar was a journey. Here are a few takeaways from the process:

  • Real-World Testing is Everything – What looks great on paper doesn’t always work in practice. Hosting backyard barbecues with each prototype helped me see what needed to change.

  • Storage and Organization Matter – The difference between a chaotic grilling session and a smooth one is having everything within reach.

  • Quality Materials Are Non-Negotiable – Outdoor furniture has to withstand heat, cold, rain, and spills. Anything less than top-tier stainless steel just won’t cut it.

After three versions and countless hours of testing, The Sidecar is finally the outdoor kitchen island I always dreamed of. It’s more than a prep station—it’s the key to stress-free outdoor entertaining. And now, I get to share it with you.
